“Of Growth”
(dedicated to Photographer Wendy Floyd)
A mom glances at the marks
on the door—lines drawn
in different colors of ink or lead
with months, days, and years
complete with names.
Watching their increase in size
cheers applauding each step taken
hearts sitting on the side lines
witnessing the miracle of them
becoming their very own person.
Embarrassed to admit
the mom confides
the door with her kids’ heights
has been loaded again and again
in a moving van.
Summer Is Over
Quietness has distilled on our street.
The empty swing moves in the breeze.
Water in the pool laps at the sides
peeking out in search of the kids.
The ball and glove catch only dust.
Puppy yelps for someone to play with.
Baby walks around and around
the house searching for big brother.
Rusty gold leaves fall from the trees.
The creaking boards from the tree house
yearn for the children’s laughter.
Yellow school buses beep their horns.
Summer is over.
The photographer with her camera
stood on the water’s edge
studying her rippling image.
The wind lifted small waves
across the pond in undulating motion
as she gazed at her mirrored self.
What do others see as their eyes
scan over our outward
appearance?
Beneath our skin and bones
we tend to protect and keep safe
our real part.
Only exposing to those we
truly love and trust
our inner heart and soul.
Her watery reflection
she captures with clear focus
with the click of her shutter button.
How Far Have You Come
Looking at the sign:
Lanana Creek Trail
Park Street
Four miles right
East Main Street.
Four miles left
Martinsville Street.
Looking backwards
you can see where you’ve been
the roots you have stepped over
the bridges you have crossed
and the lessons you have learned.
Looking forward
for the strength to carry on
hoping to help others along the path
the fortitude in completing the goal set
and using caution to not stumble
and fall.
